Skrillex—First of the year: September 2016
A fascination with dubstep began during my early design career and continued on when prompted to interpret a song through typography. The song First of the Year by Skrillex was broken down to the sounds the instruments and electronic media created with the few subtexts and actual words interpreted through the size and style of text.
The song was portrayed through different cuts and weights of Avenir Next in a flip book that built up the main sections of the song only to be interrupted by the spoken words “Call 9-1-1 Now!”. Subtexts of the song were told on the backs of the pages so that the heavy weights on the page fronts and the backwards light weights of the page backs combined to create a visual cacophany reminiscent of the feelings envoked by the audio version.
