Luxury Product Redesign: May 2017
So often gift sets are over-packaged and poorly designed. While not all of these sets on the market fall into this category a good many do. The task in this case was to create packaging for a high-end consumable item, totaling no more than $100, rebranding it in a way that is more sustainable and longer-lasting. And, if possible, find a way to create community between the consumers through social sharing or a cause while exhibiting the qualities/properties essential for meeting sustainability: reduction of overall materials. reusability beyond the retail/consumer experience, and recyclability of all material specified for the packaging.
philosophy® pure grace whipped body creme and salt body scrub are the essence of a high-end consumable product. Though clean and well designed the original set’s packaging was simple paperboard which didn’t feel luxurious and went straight into recycling. In researching philosophy® I also learned they donate 1% of all sales to the hope & grace initiative for women’s mental health and wellbeing which I wanted to highlight to create a supportive community among the women who use the product.
The bag created to contain the lotion/salt scrub was a reusable, travel jewelry bag with a cloth strip to hold rings and a zipper pocket to keep necklaces from tangling. The paperboard sleeve was seeded paper so the containers for the lotion/scrub could be used as pots for the mental health benefitting indoor plants.
