Dollar Product Redesign: May 2017
As a hands-on kind of person, admirer of unique packaging, and sustainability supporter a course on Sustainable Package Design was a no-brainer. The goal was to take an existing $1–5 product and re-design the packaging in a way that did not greatly increase the product’s price point yet exhibited the qualities/properties essential for meeting sustainability: reduction of overall materials. reusability beyond the retail/consumer experience, and recyclability of all material specified for the packaging.
The iterative process is crucial in packaging, especially when considering the reduction and reusability of it. Sketch, research, prototype, and document—then repeat. The product I chose was a Vivitar pop-up speaker from Target’s Dollar Spot. What began as a plastic and paperboard clamshell ended up as a silicon basket that can be stored flat and hang easily holding both the phone and speaker while the user enjoys other activities scored by their favorite tunes.
